What is Baptism?

Baptism is a public declaration of faith in Christ Jesus as a symbol of His salvation and grace. Like a wedding ring symbolizes one's covenant to his or her spouse, baptism by water outwardly expresses the commitment to Christ one has already made in their heart. It is the symbol of "the old man" being crucified, buried and raised with Christ! A life of repentance should follow in the wake of baptism.

Baptism is a Biblical practice however it does not make you a Believer and is not necessary for salvation. How can we be sure? “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith...it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8, 9. The outward action is a public declaration of the inward work already done. If you have any questions on this please reach out to our staff!

Why Do We Baptize by Dunking?

Firstly, because this is the example that Jesus Himself gave: Matthew 3:16

Every baptism in the Bible was by dunking:  Acts 8:38-39

The word “baptize” means to put under water, and It best symbolizes a burial and resurrection:  Romans 6:4

John Calvin

The word ‘baptize’ signifies to immerse. It is certain that immersion was the practice of the ancient church.

Martin Luther

I would have those who are to be baptized to be entirely immersed, as the word imports and the mystery signifies.

John Westley

Buried with Him, alludes to baptizing by immersion according to the custom of the first church.

Why Should Someone Be Baptized?

Scripture to Consider: Acts 2:41 | Acts 8:35-38 | Acts 22:16

Why is it important?

Every person who has believed in Christ should make their decision public through baptism. In this way you can follow Christ's example (Mark 1:9), comply with His command (Matthew 28:18-20) and demonstrate that you really are a Christian (Acts 18:8, 1 John 2:3).

Common Questions

At What Age Should One Be Baptized?

As soon as one has put genuine faith in Jesus. If a child expresses the desire, do not hinder them. There is no age limit, the only requirement is faith in Christ. If you have made the decision to follow Christ, you are not too young or too old!

What About Re-Baptism?

Baptism only need happen once. If you were a true Believer at the time of your first sprinkle or immersion baptism, being baptized again is not necessary. If you trusted in Christ at that time, rest assured in it's validity. However, if you were not born again at that time, it was not baptism out of faith and transformation and as a Believer you should be baptized.
